Benefits of roller skating or inline skating

Skating is a great form of cardio exercise. It strengthens the heart and improves fitness. It also tones the legs, core and gluteus maximus. It can improve balance. What’s not to love? Roller skating typically burns 328 calories per hour and inline skating burns more per hour, at 356 per hour. It’s a great form of exercise all round. As well as this, most skaters feel ‘free’ when they truly relax into skating. You can go anywhere on skates and unlike cycling, you will not be forced to use busy roads where cars can be dangerous for cyclists.

Some considerations for people considering roller skating or inline skating as a new form of exercise

Although there are many benefits to roller skating or inline skating, as noted above, there can be some serious considerations for people with particular health issues, due to the risk of losing balance and falling – example, people who suffer from any form of brittle bones. However, if you are one of those people, I can’t imagine you would have looked for some information on roller skating or inline skating – those people are most likely, already aware of their own capabilities and anything to be aware of. Roller skating or inline skating is also not advised for pregnant women as a significant impact to the uterus could harm an unborn baby.

What about age – how old is too old to start roller skating or inline skating?

In terms of age, roller skating or inline skating is a great form of exercise to get started with at any age. The writer has seen some very inspirational people on social media who are of retirement age, but are extremely capable, even at the skate park! Exercise is good for all ages including the older generation.

It has to be noted that taking on new challenges, especially physical ones, can be more terrifying for someone who is older. The writer believes that age goes hand in hand with wisdom and sometimes, an increased fear due to knowledge acquired throughout a lifetime. However, this should not hold anyone back from starting roller skating or inline skating. It may be the case that extra time is taken to become comfortable but there is no limit to what can be achieved.

I personally returned to skating after having a baby and was significantly older at that stage and believe having children also increases the fear factor – possibly because you know that your little person is dependent on you now! However, I was so glad to have rediscovered skating! After becoming comfortable again, it became ‘fun’ again.
