UK Weather – anyone else done now?

This is an unusual post for me. It’s all about the UK weather, and basically how this ruins the life of a keen skater who is UK based. This is going to be a it of a rant but I hope it will give some moral support to other UK skaters who are simply fed up!

The UK Weather – over the last few weeks…and year!!

As I write this blog post I note the date – it’s mid May 2026 – basically almost Summer time. Over the last few weeks the UK weather has been bitterly cold. It also hail stoned yesterday. The rain comes relentlesssly. I think I’m just about done with it… if you plan a skating session, it really is like a lottery whether or not it will land on a day with nice weather and the odds are heavily weighted in favour of it being bad – just by virtue of being UK based. Winter is basically a write off for skating due to the cod wet, slippery surfaces and constant rain. We used to get crisp frosty mornings and days in the winters, but now, we get 3/4 of a year of constant rain – rain in the Autumn, rain in the Winter, and rain in the Spring.

It’s not just me, either. The MET Office are recording some of the wettest months and years,on record for UK weather! It officially rained for the most amount of days in a row, just this winter! Here is a link to their website:

What are the options for skating in the UK when the UK Weather is raining or bitterly cold?

There are many great skating rinks in the UK which can be visited when the weather is not suited to skating in the UK. I’ve posted articles previously, listing some of the ones available, and I also posted a review of my visit to Curve Motion.

Is attending a rink the answer then?

I do not believe it is the answer…for me personally, I would like to be free to pick up my skates and go skating on most days I choose to – outside. There is nothing like ‘getting around’ or going on an adventure, on your skates. I would love to be able to skate on long smooth beach paths in the sun, like I see the Moxi girls doing in Long Beach, in the States. I want to skate in the sun and use my light up wheels in the evening without freezing to death as I go.

For me, a relocation is probable. The UK used to have some great aspects, but some of the things I loved are slowly disappearing now, anyway! Why not relcate to another place which is great for roller skating? I might just do that – watch this space!
