In this article i’m going to talk about one of my London sightseeing trips on roller skates – Buckingham Palace. Central London offers many amazing places to skate while you are seeing the sights, but Buckingham Palace is one of my favourites. It has a long strip of road running towards the palace which is great for skating, and it’s also right next to Green Park – offering another opportunity for skating. I hope you enjoy the article.

London sightseeing by skates – nearest Tube to Buckingham Palace
You can exit the Piccadily Circus tube station to get to Buckingham Palace, which is what I did and then I skated down Regent Street towards the palace. This is a great place to start with your London sightseeing journey! You may encounter a steep set of steps, depending on which way you go, which will require you holding onto the railing and once you go down those, you can turn right to skate all the way down The Mall which leads to the Buckingham Place roundabout:

Here’s a picture of The Mall- it has got two very ‘safe for skating’, pathways behind the trees on each side:

The skate down The Mall was lovely – lots of greenery to look at and very peaceful. Once you get to Buckingham Palace at the bottom and you’ve taken in the sights, you can then scoot round into Green Park on the right of Buckingham Palace, as you look at the Palace from the front. This has also got some lovely paths around the park which are great for skating. Alternatively you can see in the map image, that Big Ben is not too far away and you could skate towards the river as an alternative. I did not go this way so can’t comment yet on the suitability for skating. Watch this space!
An alternative to getting out at Piccadilly Circus would be to go straight to Green Park underground station, but I quite enjoyed the skate down Regent Street and The Mall, so this would not be my recommendation.
I did get to see some soldiers standing outside the palace and the place is obviously protected with heavy security. Be advised to watch for pickpockets.

Here are some more pictures of the palace and the surrounding monuments:

As you can see, skating is a great way to get around the sights in London. You get to take a lot more of it ‘in’ and understand how all the roads and famous places are connected and related to each other geographically, which can’t really be appreciated on the tube alone.
I hope you have enjoyed this article and it has encouraged you to have a go at sightseeing in London on your skates. I would highly recommend it!
I’ve provided a well liked video link to a video on You Tube giving you more information about the Palace and the late Queen Elizabeth.
